Nabavian: US Accepted Iran’s Terms in Talks from Position of Weakness

A senior Iranian lawmaker has disclosed new details about the behind-the-scenes dynamics of negotiations with the United States, asserting that Washington has accepted Tehran’s conditions while standing in a position of weakness.

Hawzah News Agency- Hojatoleslam Seyyed Mahmoud Nabavian, representative of Tehran in the Iranian Parliament, said the Iranian nation remains the principal pillar of strength in any diplomatic engagement, emphasizing that popular backing has consistently empowered the Islamic Republic in confronting adversaries.

“The most important point to recognize is that the backbone of this Revolution is its people,” Nabavian said in remarks to Hawzah News Agency. “It is this popular support that has enabled the Islamic Republic to stand firm against hostile pressures.”

He stated that the enemies of Iran had suffered setbacks during the recent 12-day imposed war and in subsequent unrest, and are now contemplating further military pressure. However, he warned that any aggression against Iran would escalate beyond a bilateral confrontation.

“The message of the Iranian nation is clear: any war will not remain limited. It will become a regional war,” he said. “All military, economic, political, and cultural interests of the United States in the region would be targeted.”

According to Nabavian, it is precisely this deterrent posture that has compelled Washington to seek negotiations.

“They pleaded for talks,” he said, adding that Tehran set firm conditions from the outset. “They raised the issue of missiles; we said that is absolutely non-negotiable, and they accepted. They proposed Turkey as the venue; we insisted on Oman, and they agreed.”

The lawmaker further noted that the US side had requested the presence of seven foreign ministers from regional countries at the negotiations, a condition Tehran rejected. “They backed down again,” he said.

He also stated that Washington sought the participation of the commander of US Central Command (CENTCOM) in the talks, a proposal that Iran refused. “Once more, they retreated. At this stage, they have accepted all of our conditions because they are in a weak position,” Nabavian asserted.

Addressing why Iran agreed to engage in negotiations despite deep mistrust of the United States, Nabavian said Tehran’s objective is to foster regional consensus and demonstrate its commitment to diplomacy.

“Why did we accept negotiations? To build regional consensus and to show that the Iranian nation is a nation of dialogue,” he said. “But if anyone chooses the path of war against the Islamic Republic of Iran, they will receive a crushing response.”

He expressed confidence that, just as the United States failed in previous confrontations and attempts to destabilize the country, it would ultimately falter again.

“God willing, just as America failed in the imposed 12-day war and was rebuffed by the Iranian people during unrest, it will once again be defeated in this arena,” Nabavian concluded.
